How Does the Convertible Crib Work?

What are Convertible Cribs?

Convertible cribs are full-sized, wooden cribs that can serve as both toddler beds and twin-sized beds when adjusted. They are usually more expensive than standard, non-adjustable cribs, but many parents feel that in the long run, they will save money because they won't have to buy a toddler bed, followed by a standard twin bed. Some parents, however, don't like the idea of transforming a crib into a toddler and twin bed. This is because, to them, it still looks like a crib, even when used as a twin bed. These parents would prefer to just buy the new beds for their child.

Converting the Crib into a Toddler Bed

All convertible cribs have different instructions for converting into a toddler bed, based on the design of the crib, but there are some similarities. In all convertible cribs, one side of the crib is removed and replaced with a low safety rail. The safety rails are designed to protect a toddler from rolling out of the bed, but are low enough on one end so that the toddler can crawl into the bed. In drop-side cribs, the drop side is usually the only side that can be removed and replaced with the rail.

In cribs with secure rails (designed to drop the mattress, not the rail), either side of the crib can be removed by simply unscrewing the bolts and lifting the side out. Then, the railing can be installed using the same bolt holes, nuts and screws. You will end up with a tall headboard, footboard, one high side and the low, toddler rail side; similar in looks to a daybed. This toddler bed uses the crib mattress and box springs. The side rail can be removed when the toddler is more comfortable sleeping in the bed.

Converting the Crib into a Twin Bed

To convert the crib into a twin bed, the crib must be taken completely apart. Since most cribs need to be assembled before use, this is not too difficult. Simply disassemble the crib as you assembled it, taking care not to scratch the paint, if your crib is painted. Note that cribs with drop sides cannot usually be converted into twin beds.

Remove the box springs and mattress completely, and the short sides of the crib. Store these in a dry, cool location. Keep the two wide, tall sides of the crib. These will be your headboard and footboard. Purchase a twin-sized box spring and mattress, and attach the headboard and footboard to the box spring. Some crib manufactures sell side rails that you can purchase to match the headboard and footboard, but not all do.

My husband and I are good students, we did a lot of research before deciding on this crib. Our homework included visits to Babies R Us and Jordan's, reading Baby Bargains, Consumer Reports, and reviews here on Amazon. We chose this one based on (1)Price (2)Quality of reviews/materials (3)Extended life due to conversion options (4)Preference for no drop-side (5)Availablity in a Natural finish.

Pros:
Shipping was fast! We ordered on 8/11 and it arrived 8/19.
Assembly was easy! I'm 31 weeks pregnant, and put it together alone in less than 2 hours with nothing but a Phillip's tip in my drill and the materials provided.
It's sturdy and strong without seeming massive or heavy.
It's attractive, natural pine and has graceful curves.
Included toddler rail is terrific and extends the life of the crib.
Included trundle drawer is nice bonus.
You can order parts to convert to a full-sized bed, further extending the life of the crib.
All-wood/metal construction.

Cons:
Directions could use a little fine-tuning. I'm pretty handy, and they were not so clear. The wooden crib parts are not labeled at all, making it difficult to determine which side was which. I also ended up with extra parts. There were many more locking washers included (20) than were indicated in the parts list (4), and the instructions never told you how and when to use them. I used 4 when installing the metal platform, but didn't use the rest.
Trundle drawer is pretty cheesy. Not that this should be a selling point of the crib, but it's mostly particle board, the under-drawer support is too short, and the total drawer size is tiny compared to the dimensions of the crib. No wonder they don't show it in the picture! Ironically, this was the only part that had any labels for assembly.
Pine is a soft wood, and dings pretty easily. It arrived with a couple of dings, and I put a couple in it during assembly. This is to be expected and is a compromise we were willing to make based on the price.

Notes:
This will be our first child, so we haven't used it yet, nor do we have much to compare it to besides other furniture.
Someone less handy might have more trouble with assembly.
Amazon told us it would arrive in January, but that probably was a SNAFU.

When I saw this item online, I thought it looked solid and beautifully crafted. I know however that things don't always look as good when you receive them. This item exceeded my expectations. Not only is the color great, but it is as stable as I thought it would be. My husband put it together, and had no problem. We love that the side is curved so I can get my 9 month old son out easily. I am 7 months pregnant and was concerned that because the side does not go down, that I would have a problem reaching him. I have not had this problem. Also, the mattress will still go down two more levels for when he begins to pull himself up.
The only thing people should know, is that THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SPRINGS. We thought the instructions were left out as there was a piece of cardboard attached to the springs, and could not see the instructions. This item sat in the box for days while we tried to get a response from the manufacturer as to receiving a copy of the instructions. I wish someone had informed us of the location prior to our issue. Anyway, great item!

I did alot of of research on cribs and found this one to best fit my needs. I am short and the bowed front helps with getting in the crib to lift a baby out. This is something I had not thought of before!
Assembly was fairly easy. My husband and I put it together in 2 hours. The crib is solid, stable and a beautiful honey oak color. One note - the drawer rolls on the floor under the crib and therefore does not have any 'top' to it. This could lead to dust on the items you store in there or a lovely nap place if you have cats! I would definitely recommend this crib and can't wait to watch my baby sleeping in it.

I have to admit when I first looked for cribs I wanted something that looked more fancy than this one. But, safety and high ratings were more important. I read so many great reviews about this crib. With the more expensive cribs people had problems with quality, mattresses fitting, or poor instructions. We haven't had any of those problems. I did choose to get the DaVinci Jenny Lind instead of the Delta because they use better quality products and finish. Also, it's a one hand drop down. So I would pay the few extra dollars for the DaVinci. It looks beautiful set up with the bedding too.

The 4 in 1 design is actually three configurations with the daybed and toddler bed being the same setup. This design has been around for years but was new to me. I am more familiar with the "jail cell" like cribs designed in the early to mid 1970's and was pleasantly surprised to find this for our son.

The piece is made from solid hardwood with a cherry finish, no MDF or particle board, and after a few years use, if it gets scratched up, then refinishing the wood would not be a major project. The crib mattress support is metal tubing that appears to have a hard rust preventative finish.

The design is solid and would take an adult making an effort to tip it, even in the daybed configuration. Yet it does not weigh so much that one person can not move it around, by sliding it, to vacuum or clean the carpet.

I only noticed three items I can criticize:

The counter sunk screws used to assemble the crib did not come with wood plugs to cover the screw heads, although flush or button plugs can be purchased at most hardware stores and stained to match. I do not recommend flush fitting ones since they will need to be removed later.

The hex key wrench that was supplied with the assembly hardware does not fit within all spots; the use of a standard hex key with a short side is required.

The sideboards needed for converting it into the full sized bed is sold separately; however, most metal bed frames will allow enough play in the end mounts that the sideboards would not be required; provided it has mounts at both the head and foot. Also if a bed skirt is used the sideboards would not normally show, so they could be considered optional.

This is an excellent buy for the price.

This is a very elegant, beautiful and sturdy piece of baby furniture. It came with every piece in my single shipment. I do see one scratch on it but its ok. It's also quite roomie. My son plays in it sometimes when I need to work and it's large enough for him to move around lots. The only complaint I have is that the front frame is kinda low. I'm afraid about how easy my son may be able to climb over in the future when he's a little bigger.

Overal I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

This has survived my 2 year old son & still looks great! Everything about the durability & portability written about in the previous review is correct. I have disassembled & assembled many times because I can't decide which room I want to keep it in & it's just as solid every time. It's strong too! I've laid down several times with my son & did no harm to the frame.

One thing I will caution, and not so much caution just be prepared for...the one thing that did not survive my child are the bed rails for the toddler bed setup. He found them fun to stand on...

Other than that I have recommended this crib several times in the last 2.5 years

My husband and I purchased this crib because we wanted a modern yet affordable option for our baby. We just couldn't stomach the idea of having some hideous, traditional, spindled piece of baby furniture. This crib is great - sturdy, easy to use, nice to look at, and made of all solid wood pieces. As far as converting to a toddler bed, you should always order the conversion pieces at the time you purchase the crib because the item could be discontinued at any time - no matter what crib, maker, or production date. We were advised to do this by the retailer and found it tremendously helpful since, after 18 months, the color of our crib is no longer in circulation. Overall, this crib was worth every penny and will most certainly last through subsequent babies.

Do NOT purchase this crib, it has been nothing but a headache for us since we first received it. The drop side mechanism is made of plastic and broke on us twice. The manufacturer is unapologetic and only refers you back to the retailer for any recourse. We purchased this crib under 2 years ago for our newborn who we now want to transition to a toddler bed. The fact that this crib was advertised as "convertible" and that a toddler guardrail could later be purchased and attached to convert the crib into a toddler bed, was a main selling point for us. Only now, almost 2 years later, did we discover that the crib has been discontinued and they do not manufacture the toddler guardrail anymore. Once again, the manufacturer was unapologetic and offered us no other accommodations. So now we are stuck with a crib whose drop side does not work and can not be converted into a toddler bed. We now have to go out and purchase a separate toddler bed. Needless to say, we will not be purchasing a toddler bed from Babi Italia or LaJobi, its parent company.

the crib came with multiple missing hardware. when i contacted LaJobi as instructed i was told that this model was discontinued, which by the way was not mentioned in the product details before i purchased, and that i would have to PAY additional $45 for a tiny bag of screws and bolts! it's inconvenient enough having to wait on missing parts that should have have been included with my initial purchase, but i am outraged that, Lajobi instead of rectifying their mistake, that they would even have the audacity to charge an outrageous sum for it.

needless to say i'll never purchase another LaJobi product again. it's a shame because the crib itself is actually solidly built especially for the price and i was happy with the Scandi dresser i purchased at the same time. i am also unhappy that i ended up with a convertible crib that won't convert due the fact this line has been discontinued but i'll try my luck at the local hardware store to finish making the crib, rather than dealing with the hassle of returning at this point.

My wife and I just finished putting this crib together. It took a total of 25 minutes start to finish. The instructions were extremely easy to follow. We bought this exact crib in honey oak 18 months ago for baby number one and it has worked so well, we ordered the same crib in white for baby number two. Our original crib is in the same great shape as when we first put it together. The only adjustments we have done, where to lower the mattress support heights from higher to lower. Even that process only took a matter of minutes. I have read crib purchase reviews where the box arrived extremely beat up. When ours arrived the outside of the box was a little rough, but the crib pieces inside are very well packed, padded, and wrapped and there was not a scratch on the white finish. The super saver free shipping arrived at our door 6 days from date of purchase. I have never wrote a review for an online purchase before, but we are so pleased with our two cribs that I wanted to pass on a very positive message to those who may be comtemplating buying this crib.
P.S. I'm a physician and this crib could not be any safer...no solid side walls or backing...just the well spaced rounded slates all the way around and no moving parts

We purchased this crib in white and love it - very stable, sturdy and beautiful. The only problem was that the white finished was delivered chipped (pretty severely) in several noticeable areas. Naturally our concern was that our baby would chew on these pieces and ingest the paint chips. Had to reorder the crib three times to get enough pieces to create one that looks very nice and new. Packing really isn't all that great. Am sure that is not the case with the wood finishes. Ordered through Amazon and they were great working with us until we were happy. For the price - this is a great product and would recommend it. Not many cribs that are this sturdy offer a toddler and full-size bed conversion. Am confident that this crib will work perfectly once our little one arrives.

Our son is now 18months old and this crib has been amazing. Yes I agree that it does scratch easily but it is solid and very sturdy. Our only complaint is that the front rail that curves out to the front of the crib has a gap just wide enough for our son to stick his arm into and get it stuck. Now that he is starting to try to put his leg over the crib it gets stuck in there too. We have since moved him to a toddler bed but the arm getting stuck has been an ongoing thing since he was alittle past 12 months old. Other than that we love the crib and plan on using it for all of our babies, though we may make our own alterations on it to prevent our 3 month old from going through the same thing with getting his arm stuck.

If you do have this crib always remember to keep your monitor on and loud enough to where you can hear the cries if a little arm gets stuck.

This is a good crib. We had to buy a new crib for our third child because we lost the hardware to our other crib in a move. The Delta crib is sturdy and was VERY easy to put together, probably 20 minutes. However, the product description says "one hand raise and lower" and "teething rail cover included". It does NOT have a side that raises and lowers and did not come with a teething rail cover. Other than that it is very nice.

This is an incredibly sturdy crib that looks very clean and chic. Unlike other cribs we have assembled (three, mainly for friends) this one has absolutely no looseness in any of the joints. It is solid enough that I would trust standing in it.

The price is right and they didn't skimp on materials. Assembly was simple and didn't require any special tools. We will soon be converting it to a toddler bed and will report how that goes. The instructions imply that it is quite simple.

I bought this crib for my daughter and absolutely love it. It is beautiful, sturdy & it had a great price with it. When it arrived it was in a very large & heavy package but that is to be expected. I think this crib is a great value for the price. It looks great in my nursery. The detail looks good in person. I debated on whether or not to purchase this crib because I had not seen it in person. It was available online only and was not on display in any of the stores. The gamble paid off. It doesn't look "plasticy" like some of the other lower priced white cribs. And it has a spring thingy that holds the mattress and not the plywood. It has three levels for the mattress. On the highest level, I found it easy to reach in and out and get the baby. As far as the color goes, its a true white.

I was looking for a white crib for my baby girl who is due in August. I decorated the nursery in shabby chic style and I really wanted a crib that fit perfectly. This crib is it!! The wood detail on the backboard completely makes the crib. It is very elegant and girly. The shipping was very quick and there wasn't one dent or scratch anywhere. My husband put it together very quickly and it is very sturdy. The only complant that we have is there are no screw hole covers. Since we are going to take it apart someday, I just decided to dab some white paint over the screws to hide them a little. The price is very affordable especially since the crib looks like it costs a lot more. I would highly recommend it for a little girl.
